Chapter 6

Zoe

I know it’s gross, but I didn’t brush my teeth last night.

For the same reason I didn’t tell my handler that my position was compromised from the get go.

Anyone who’s ever known me would understand why. Most people included in that circle would chalk it up to how I like to play with fire.

There are about two people in this world, who know how obsessed I was with Sladen my whole life. And they would both give me hell for putting myself in the position that I’m in now.

Once I realized he was never going to return home, I sucked it up, putting my fantasies behind me and looked for a way to make a difference in this world.

This morning when I woke up, I thought of the maraschino cherries that I have always been obsessed with and the time Sladen covered for me when he caught me eating every last one at his family’s Christmas party. God, I couldn’t have been more than ten at the time. Of all the drinks he could have made for me last night, he made one with those same cherries – not even realizing the connection.

Then I pretty much levitate out of bed.

Fuck!

I called him Sladen last night.

At least twice.

And that was after getting caught in a restricted area of the Royal Bastard’s clubhouse.

Looking around, I follow protocol and pull on some running clothes before heading out. It’s still fairly early so it will be a while before anyone is stirring to help me get my car back, so I head out toward the closest trail system where I’ve made a point to go running regularly.

After the second mile, I slide my hand down to my phone to switch from music to a call. I dial my assigned number after the beep and continue running.

The longer I run, the more my stomach starts to churn.

My mid-week check in call went unanswered. Now, this one is being ignored also.

I dial a separate number, one where I key in a code that indicates that I’m safe but request a call back.

Then I continue running along the path and just as I’m veering off to make my way back to my apartment, a call cuts in – interrupting the music I have playing.

“Who is this?” I ask, brusquely.

“You were set up, Dylan,” a man’s voice drawls out.

“Give me your name and ID number now, or I’m hanging up,” I reply, dread filling my stomach as I stop running.

“There are factions within the Bureau nowadays. One of them wants to destroy that chapter of the Royal Bastards in order to protect a human trafficking consortium. There is no cause to go after them, but they’re hoping the extremely inexperienced trainee they sent in will end up dead, giving them the chance to burn that clubhouse to the ground.”

With that bit of news, the call disconnects and I promptly turn around, projectile vomiting all over a tree trunk.

Because I know it’s true.

Before my internship ended and I was supposed to start my actual training, I was called into my boss’s office.
